Welcome back from the week-long Chinese New Year break, Peacock Nation!

Two weeks back, Fayette House participated in the Recruitment Drive organized by the college. Response was overwhelmingly great and we would like to thank everyone for that! =D You guys gave us more motivation to bring Fayette House to greater heights this year!

Now, let's refresh the event together! =)

Held from 17th to 19th January at the Ground Floor of SEGi College Subang Jaya, the Recruitment Drive of Fayette House was definitely the talk of the college! Over 300 students signed up for our mailing list and we can't wait to get in touch with you! Things got even better when a handful of students also decided to sign up for Fayette House's sub-committee - a group of student helpers when Fayette House needs extra hands during events. Last but not least, many enjoyed the delicious cookie treats given out by Fayette House at the drive!

Martin Luther King was born on January 5, 1929 but is celebrated on the third Monday of January yearly as a federal holiday in the United States.

Tiger Trex Campaign: Pledge to Save Tigers

We have barely 500 tigers in Malaysia.

Join us in order to save the tigers.

The group works on a project to support the WWF TX2 campaign to double the number of tigers in the country by 2022.

We’re trying to get a 50,000 pledge to help out the tigers in Malaysia to urge our Prime Minster, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, to attend the Tiger Summit in Vladivostok, Russia, in September 2010 to raise the awareness.

Freshie Party Summer 2010

Have you ever felt lonely in an environment where everything is a blur and people just flash by, not knowing if they were strangers or your friend? This type of environment is not acceptable in the eyes of Fayette House of Segi College Subang Jaya; therefore a Freshie Party was organized to help the students bear their grounds. The party was held on June 11^th and started at half past eleven. Evidently, the party began with around fifty plus students introducing themselves and getting to know each other. Not only was this necessary for the games played during the day, but this will come in handy throughout their stay in the American Degree Program no matter what their course or major. After the introductions were established, games were organized to test the memory of each student. By far the most popular game was ‘The Blanket Game’ in which all fifty students were separated into two teams by a blanket. A selected person from each team then had to guess who the other team sent out when the blanket drops. After all the fun and games were over, a video of what Fayette House does and who they were was shown right before lunch was served. All in all, the party was a huge success with no tickets left for the extra ten walk-in students! The Freshie’s will never feel lonely again!

Raleigh KL: Skytrex Fundraising Event 2010

Fayette House is currently supporting a fundraising event for a Raleigh KL's expedition to Bornea at the end of this year! If you were in college today, you might have spotted a poster, entitled "Skytrex Adventure" on ADP notice board. Also, there were fliers left on ADP counters for interested Skytrex participants. The posters can also be spotted in Fayette House, cafeteria and 1st Floor.

So, what's happening you ask. On Tuesday (June 8, 2010), Raleigh KL will conduct a fundraising event at Taman Pertanian Malaysia, Shah Alam. The purpose of the fundraiser is to support the expenses of two Raleigh KL members who will be going for an expedition to Borneo for community work at the end of the year. It is a very noble cause of course but they need fund. And in order to collect enough fund for their expedition, they want you to have fun while helping with the fund!

Here's the deal. There are four available slots for the Skytrex adventure on Tuesday; 9am, 10.30am, 12pm and 1.30pm. Raleigh KL is providing transportation from Asia Jaya Putra LRT Station one hour before each booking time slots. At the rate of RM65, you will be provided with t-shirt, glove, entry fee to Taman Pertanian Malaysia, transportation (as mentioned), lunch and lots of fun when you go from tree to tree via series of aerial obstacles suspended at 3 meters to 22 meters in the air! You can cash or bank-in to 1430-0006860-05-5 (CIMB Bank), email the persons-in-charge your scanned copy of bank-in slip as proof and notify them through sms by this Saturday (June 5, 2010).

ADP Update: MUET Year End 2010

Dear Peacocks,

The registration for MUET Year End 2010 is now opened. Please get your registration form at ADP counter, make RM60 payment to Bursary and hand in your completed registration form to Ms. Anna (ADP Coordinator) by June 4, 2010 (Friday). Please take note that MUET is one of the English proficiency tests, besides TOEFL and IELTS recognized by Upper Iowa University and it a compulsory to complete one of the tests before you can take UIU subjects. Orientation for May 2010 Intake

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to mix around different types of fishes and put them in an aquarium? Well that was what SEGi College Subang Jaya (SCSJ) did on May 24, 2010. There were not only ADP students this time, but a mix of people from FOCAD, FOBAA and Foundation studies among others. The day began with a massive rush when fresh graduates from all over Malaysia and the world dashed towards their respective counters on the ground floor of SCSJ. Members from all SCSJ clubs, including Fayette House, the Psychology Club, Communication Club and the SEGi College Student Council, to name a few, joined in to control this colossal tidal wave of students. After a two hour fight, all students managed to register themselves and find a spot in the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH).

The orientation officially started with a speech from our principal Dr. Lisa Tan which consisted of encouraging words of wisdom as well as advice on what to expect in SCSJ. Not to forget, there was also a special appearance from UIU’s own Pete the Peacock that entertained the new students.

There was then a briefing from all members of the different faculties to keep it informative. After the boring stuff was done, a hyped-up Ms. Helena, ADP’s head got all the students on their feet with a little exercising and a lot of cheering for their favourite world cup teams. The ADP students were then gathered after lunch to register for their subjects and were given a short introduction to their Fayette House members. What a hectic day it was.

Earth Day Campaign 2010

In conjunction with Earth Day on April 22, 2010, Fayette House made April 2010 the Earth Month! The theme this year was to get creative by reducing, reusing and recycle (the 3R's) with the tagline 'Show Mother Nature How Creative You Are'! Thus, Fayette House decorated the 10th floor the Earth Month-style. From the left over cardboard boxes Fayette House had piling up in Fayette House, we cut them into cardboards so that we could write fun environmental messages on them. Next, we had them hung or pasted all over the 10th floor counter for the whole month! Other than the colourful cardboards, we had a huge banner with environmental messages too! But the special thing about the banner was that it was a reused banner! The banner was actually the work of students back in 2008 and we brought it back to show our support in reusing things. Other than that, Fayette House set up a t-shirt painting booth so that students also could be creative and express their appreciation and love for Mother Nature. We hoped that these gestures will help ignite the environmental-friendly self in you! Happy Earth Month!

In a time when people are too busy to remember the little things in life, we forget that our Earth is indeed sick and we need to spread the awareness. Taking the initiative, Fayette House set up an Earth Day Camp to get the students of Segi College Subang Jaya to feel closer to nature. It was a thrilling event in which the students spent two days and one night in the Chilling Waterfalls in Kuala Kubu Bharu. It was an exciting journey where the students learnt survival skills while having fun in the heavily forested area. The trip started off with a half an hour trek to the waterfall in which we struggled past six streams and many other little obstacles like deep muddy puddles and spiked plants. When we arrived at the waterfall, we played many water games to show how enjoyable the water can be besides in a drink. After spending a productive two hours around the waterfall, the students headed back through the same route and managed to reach the camping site before the sun set. After everybody settled down, food was found in the form of a barbecue and in the spirit of Earth Day, the students had to bring their own metal utensils and plates. The night ended on a positive note with everybody singing around a make-shift campfire made out of candles and a whole lot of spirit. The next day started with a simple breakfast and time was given to the students to enjoy the wonder of their surroundings. Greetings to all! We would like to say a big thank you for supporting Fayette House ever since it was first launched. Your cooperation and contributions have helped us improve so much in serving you. Thank you!

Our upcoming event this April will be Earth Day Camp 2010. This is a camp just for you! As Earth Day falls on April 22, 2010, our camp will be during the weekend before Earth Day. This whole April will be Earth month, so whatever you do, please think of Mother Earth; Don't litter, don't commit open burning, carpool more often, and make sure you flush the toilets after using it in our college XD

This year, we are going to camp at Chiling Waterfalls! Sounds chilling? It not only sounds like the name, it also feels like the name. At Chiling Waterfall, you are able to feel a personal touch of Mother Nature. You get to breathe the fresh air, experience the sounds of the birds chirping, play with the chilly waters and dwell in the greenery of the Earth. Ain't it a wonderful experience? The purpose of this camp is for you and I to enjoy this paradise that God has created for us. Check out these pictures:

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! It is interesting how this Irish celebration is more popularly celebrated by the Americans and that is why Fayette House celebrated the holiday with Fayette House's own twist too! When you think of St. Patrick's Day, you think of green and that was what we had; everyone was encouraged to wear green and those who wore were even rewarded with a promotional price for a beverage that we sold! Speaking of beverage, St. Patrick's Day is usually celebrated with lots of beer but college didn't allow Fayette House to bring in beer so we brought in the root of all beers, the root beer! An informative booth was set up with Fayette House officers in green distributing St. Patrick Day memos and selling root beer to all students and staffs! We hope you enjoyed your St. Patrick's Day this year because we did!

Fayette House Installation March 2010

During the installation ceremony of Fayette House 2010 in December 2009, only ten committee members were installed. After months of seeking for two suitable candidates for the remaining two seats left in the supposedly-twelve committee members student board, the Board came to a final decision to install Sean Mervin and Aaron Daniel to fill up the empty seats. Both the members went through stages of nomination, interview and probation period before they were officially installed as Project Managers for the 2010 board. Congratulations to the newly installed member and all the best to the entire committee!

The launch of ADP Theme 2010 took place at ADP counter with the presence of students and staffs of ADP, besides Pete the Peacock and Fayette House! It was a new starting point for all ADP staffs and students as they watch the confetti fall when the theme was revealed. Treat yourself to some photos taken during the launch!

CNY Celebration Featured on UIU Website

The Office of Communication and Marketing of Upper Iowa University (UIU) put up a video on Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations in UIU campuses around the world and SEGi Subang American Degree Program (ADP) was included in the video! The video is currently featured on the front page of UIU website, at the bottom left. Check the video out now!

UIU Haiti Relief Fund

Fayette House members who were involved in the noble cause.

In support of the "UIU Haiti Relief Fund" in Fayette, Iowa, SEGi Subang Fayette House headed the fundraisers in the Subang campus. Together with Communication Club and AVES of ADP, and Student Council of SEGi College Subang Jaya, money was raised in February to help the earthquake victims of Haiti.

Way before any fund-raising activities took place, Fayette House set up a notice board next to cafeteria at 1st Floor to create awareness among college students on the catastrophe that hit Haiti. Upon getting the permission from the college authority, Fayette House went class to class to collect donations from ADP students, besides offering RM1 to the relief fund for every UIU car sticker sold. The response for both donation collection and car sticker promotion was overwhelming. As for Communication Club, the club conducted a two-day charity car wash! Not forgetting, AVES and Student Council allowed Fayette House to leave donation jars at their Valentine's Day booth.

Guess what?! We raised a total of RM714 for the earthquake victims of Haiti! A big thank you to every contributor!

Chinese New Year Celebration 2010

Fayette House members in red, ushering the new Lunar year with yee sang.

In conjunction with Chinese New Year, Fayette House members decorated Fayette House at 1st Floor and ADP counter at 10th Floor, two weeks before the celebration. Mandarin oranges were also served to visitors at Fayette House.

Today when college resumed after the students were off for Chinese New Year break, Fayette House celebrated Chinese New Year in college. Pete the Peacock was seen in 10th Floor, giving out 'ang pao' (red packets) to ADP staffs and students. Among the committee members of Fayette House, there was a yee sang session. It was a great celebration and hopefully that would bring a terrific year to everyone in ADP!

Fundraising for Furry Friends Farm 2010

One of the students of American Degree Program (ADP) was involved with a fund-raising project for Furry Friends Farm, a NGO shelter for abandoned dogs and cats; the shelter is governed by Raleigh International KL. Her team planned to fund-raise through sales in colleges and so she approached Fayette House for support to sell foods and drinks in SEGi College Subang Jaya. In line with Fayette House's objectives to serve the students of ADP in any way possible, Fayette House supported the event.

On 20th and 21st January 2010, team Delta of Furry Friends Farm set up booth at 1st Floor of college. Among the foods on sale were assorted breads and ABC (ice kacang), besides their top-sale item, bubble tea! A few Fayette House members helped out with the sale by pulling in crowds and helping with the making of bubble tea; it was a fun-filled experience! The fund-raiser was worth the effort because at the end of the two-day fund-raiser, the cause was a big success!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2010

In an effort to make studies in Malaysia more American for the students of American Degree Program (ADP), Fayette House celebrated Martin Luther King's Day in college on 18th Jan 2010.

Besides playing videos of Martin Luther King's famous "I Have A Dream" speech, informative fliers on the legendary figure were distributed to students as well. But the highlight of the celebration was having booth visitors write their dreams on memo pads provided, to be shared with everyone in college. "Dreams" shared included academical wishes, like 'obtaining GPA of 4.0', and random wishes, like 'marrying Miley Cyrus'. With no doubt, it was an interesting celebration.

Although the party was just a simple party with simple games and activities, it was simply awesome! Everybody not only left with more friends, everybody left with a smile too. And that was the whole point of the event; to make new friends and to have fun.

It's the beginning of a new year and it's also the time where new students come in for a new semester. What's better than a fun orientation for the young Peacocks? Hand in hand with Student Council of SEGi College Subang Jaya, Fayette House took part in the orientation for students of January 2010 Intake. We had ice breaking games together where everybody got to laugh, mingle around and have fun together. Before anyone knew it, everybody made a handful of new friends!

I, hereby present to you a Prom Night brought to you by SCSJ's very own Student Council and Fayette House!!!

You are cordially invited to join us in a night filled with fun and excitement, while at the same time you can enjoy a night filled with mysteries and fantasies in our Midsummer Night'sDream, held at the Berjaya Times Square, precisely at 8 o'clock in the evening.

The dress code for this event is strictly formal.

The first 100 early birds will get to purchase the ticket at the price of RM80 instead of the usual RM85. *approach any Student Council or Fayette House members to purchase the tickets or for any inquiries*

There is also a promotion where you can reserve a table (accommodating 10 people) at a price of RM750. Of course, you don't have to fork up that some of money straightaway. You can pay a certain amount for deposit.

CAMPING @ GUNUNG NUANG - Part 2

So what happen after the hiking trip?

MAKAN time! So it is customary that we have Barbecue (BBQ) for dinner as we are camping ^_^BBQ, Frisbee and hungry souls waiting.

More food = happy smiles
(Cynthia not smiling because she has food in her mouth =p)

Oh look...they were trying to start eating before everyone comes!
(Look at Ms. Laura's evil eyes muahahaha....should we steal the food?)

And so, fellow friends, it was a happy ending. Everyone got their share of dinner, so no worries =D.
Did you think the night will end after dinner? Of cause not! We had a campfire and Our beloved DR.STEVEN joined us for after dinner fun.

Cynthia, came up with GREEN quiz where we all had to guess the right answers to the questions she gave. Those who got the wrong answer was punished by 'the right answer' people to do some form of entertainment.

After the campfire, it started drizzling. We had to shift our activities into the available covered areas. Our post campfire 'activities' actually involves.........

MORE BBQ!!! And so we ate till the weeee hours of the morning..... well at least until all the food supply ran out.

By that time, most of us has retire to the tents to get some sleep. The night there was colddddd and wet. NO JOKE!! So next time we go there again. We shall all bring jackets and sleeping bags.

And so, it will be safe to conclude that the EARTH DAY CAMP @ GUNUNG NUANG 2009
was a success. We all had fun, fun and what else but FUN. And along the way of having fun, we learnt more about mother nature and simple but effective ways to preserve it. Cynthia's Earth Day quiz gave us some fresh insights on what mother nature really is.

Shall we look forward to more camps like this?
A time for bonding and supporting a cause.
Lets anticipate another round of clean, green, and positive fun camping!

EARTH DAY CAMP (18.04.2009) - PART 1

Hello all ADP students! ITS SUMMER!
Hope everyone had a great holiday and is ready to get back into classes for another round of pounding by the lecturers ^-^
Well let the Fayette House start by refreshing our memory on what we did for EARTH DAY 2009

CAMPING @ GUNUNG NUANG

DAY ONE
Everyone gathered at SEGi College Subang Jaya at approximately 8am ready to dirty their hands for an awesome camping trip.
We reach Gunung Nuang which is located in HULU LANGAT at 11.30am and the first thing we did was not rest.... We had to set up the TENTS!!!
With direct afternoon sun atop our head, and an empty stomach, we wasted no time to put up the tents which we will call home for a night.

That is us, setting up the tents under the sorching heat. But it was all worth it ^-^

After setting up the tents, we moved on to our next activity which was HIKING!!!
We split into 2 groups.
The first group took a 2 hour steep hike up to a waterfall.
The second group took a 30min jungle trek to a river.

Yours truly, the writer followed the first group to hike up 2 hours to reach the waterfall.
The beginning of the hike was fun. We started hiking merrily, talking, singing and enjoying the view. Also, being the crazy and fun loving ADP students that we are, we also spread our joy to other hikers there by saying hello to everyone.

However, after 1 hour, it was very obvious that the group has become increasingly silent. Everyone was getting tired...very very TIRED from hiking up the STEEP slopes. We had to make constant pit stops by then as many were moaning and asking "are we there yet?"

FINALLYYYYYafter 2 hours of sweat and leg muscle cramps... we were greeted by our reward which was a fantastic COLD waterfall!ahhhh the blissful clean, cold and refreshing waterfall

We spent almost and hour there just enjoying nature at its best. No air pollution, no noise pollution and no water pollution.
With heavy hearts, we had to pack up and start hiking back down as the sky was getting dark.
But before we leave, as always there will be some customary photo taking session.

FAYETTE, Iowa (February 17, 2009) -Senior Elaine Hui Shan Tan is a student at Upper Iowa University-Malaysia, but will be spending this semester at the Fayette campus fulfilling her internship requirements, as well as taking a few courses. Tan's graduation will also be twice as special because she plans to walk in two ceremonies-one this May in Fayette and one in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia when she returns home.

Tan is double majoring in communications and psychology and interning her first eight weeks with the UIU International Programs group, translating several manuals into her native Malay language and other projects. She says the staff is having fun learning her language and exchanging quips on various words. Next term, Tan will do her psychology internship with faculty in that department.

This is Tan's first trip to the U.S. and she says there are many differences she likes and some not so much. For example, she arrived in Cedar Rapids one week before the minus 34 degree temperatures hit, setting all-time record lows. The year-round temperature in Malaysia averages 82 degrees with high humidity. "I had to borrow a coat, hat and gloves from people I knew who had visited the States in winter before, because I don't own a winter coat," explained Tan.

One experience Tan says she is especially enjoying is dorm life, something new to her. "I love having my own room and students and things going on around me all of the time," she said. "It has given me a chance to meet so many new people, and I am never lonely or bored." Tan keeps in touch with her family through Facebook so she has not gotten homesick.

Other activities Tan keeps busy doing are attending athletic events, going on movie and mall trips, spending a lot of time studying in the library and church on Sundays at Elgin's First Baptist Church. She even went to a Super Bowl Party. "I don't understand football because we don't have it in Malaysia," said Tan. "Anyway, the men watched the game in the living room, while the women hung around the kitchen talking and eating."

Dr. DeWayne Frazier, senior vice president of International Programs, was instrumental in Tan's coming to Upper Iowa in Fayette. "The first time I met Elaine Tan was at the grand opening of the Fayette House in Kuala Lumpur," said Frazier. "I will never forget the words she shared at the ceremony about the importance of the American degree program in her native land, and it was at that moment I truly understood why UIU has centers overseas. One student at a time, we are making a difference in so many lives. "

Over the past two years, the number of international students studying on the Fayette campus has grown from 6 to 45 students. "We hope to continue to grow this number in keeping with Upper Iowa's strategic plan, which encourages the seamless movement of students at our university and creating an environment in which diversity is respected, encouraged and nurtured," said Frazier.

Frazier added, "I am sure that someday Elaine will be one of the leaders of her country, and I will be proud to claim that Upper Iowa had a role in shaping this young lady's future."

Upper Iowa University's American degree program in Malaysia is a joint venture with SEGi University College in Malaysia. UIU and SEGi currently offer the program in five locations across Malaysia including, Kota Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Subang Jaya and Penang. UIU has operated undergraduate programs in Malaysia for over 10 years.

Last Friday on the 20th of March, ADP had an orientation day for the new student intake at the Theater Hall. The Fayette House committee members were in charge of breaking the ice among the new students (though we all know that the purpose is for us to 'bully' them first hahahaha) and came up with a variety of mini games to enjoy together.

International Women's Day with CLINIQUE

Last week on the 11th of March 2009, Fayette House had organized a workshop specially for the ladies on hygiene and cosmetics. The workshop was sponsored by CLINIQUE, and the speaker was none other than Alex Tan.

During this session, participants and the speaker interact frequently, with the former given a better insight of hygiene upkeep and the dos and don'ts of cosmetics. A volunteer was called up on stage where the speaker began showing how to maintain a clean and smooth skin using only cleanser, toner and moisturiser.

Ladies, it is time we all start keeping our skin healthy and clean for smoother and nicer look. After all, makeup can only do that much to make us look gorgeous (and they can't keep away those horrible zits we all dread so much either!)

Yee Sang in Cantonese means fish.. Well I don't know how much this is true but this is what I found out. It is said that the higher we bring the content of the dish, the more luck will come to us. Anyways, we had our Yee Sang gathering in front of Fayette House on the 21st of January 2009. It was held before we went for our Chinese New Year holidays.. We had this gathering on the same day as the Martin Luther King's day.. =)

Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.

The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors.

The sacrifice to the ancestors, the most vital of all the rituals, united the living members with those who had passed away. Departed relatives are remembered with great respect because they were responsible for laying the foundations for the fortune and glory of the family.

The presence of the ancestors is acknowledged on New Year's Eve with a dinner arranged for them at the family banquet table. The spirits of the ancestors, together with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one great community. The communal feast called "surrounding the stove" or weilu. It symbolizes family unity and honors the past and present generations.
